Q. How would you characterize this year’s team?
A. Very young but solid work ethic.
Q. What will be the keys to your success?
A. Improvement on the lines of scrimmage.
Q. Who will be your key leaders on the team?
A. Austin Hernandez (So., RB/ OLB) is a great young player who has an extremely bright future. Alex Hall (Sr., OL/DL) is a vocal leader on our line of scrimmage who has played a lot of football. Austin Smith (So., TE/LB) plays with emotion and is a hard-nosed kid.
Q. What are your biggest reasons for optimism?
A. Everything is new: staff, offense, defense, and mindset.
Q. What will keep you up at night?
A. My kids (young children) crying. That’s about all that does.
Q. What can you build on from last year?
A. We do not even talk about last year.
Q. Will we see anything different this year?
A. Everything.
Q. How would you characterize your team’s speed?
A. That’s an area where we must improve. Keeping the scheme simple will hopefully allow us to play faster than what we actually are.
Coach’s View
Our mindset as a football program right now is on improving each day. We don’t talk about winning “X” number of games. We stress doing the little things right every day. We have a tough schedule against some very well-coached teams. With our youth, we know it will be a challenge, but we are looking forward to it. Our focus is on improving from one day to the next. During the season, our goal will be to improve from one week to the next.
