Q&A with Coach Jeff Poston

Dade County high school football coach Jeff PostonQ: How would you characterize this year’s team?

A: Hungry!

Q: What will be the keys to your success?

A: We have to find depth and stay healthy.

Q: Who will be your key leaders on the team?

A: Austin Sorrelle (OL), Brodie Swader (TE), Brody Cooper (QB/WR), Isaac Pangle (DL), and Cody Williams (LB).

Q: What are your biggest reasons for optimism?

A: We have created some excitement by changing our offense. We lost four games by a total of 10 points last season, so now kids are interested in football, and we’re seeing a better turnout this year.

Q: What can you build on from last year?

A: We had some success last season offensively, and we played a lot of young kids, so hopefully, that experience will help us take another step forward this season.

Q: Any lessons learned from last year?

A: We have to be more physical offensively, and we have to simplify some things offensively. We threw a ton of new concepts at our kids last year, and we didn’t really master any of those concepts.

Q: Will we see anything different this year?

A: No, we’re going to spread people out and throw the ball all over the yard on offense.

Q: How would you characterize your team’s speed?

A: Faster than you probably think we are, but slower than we want to be.

Coach’s View

This team has the potential to make some noise. The kids have worked extremely hard in the off-season, and they’re excited about football. Our biggest obstacle remains depth, and we have to find a way to keep kids healthy through the first week of November. If we can do that, we should still be playing the second week of November.
