Q & A With Coach Ted Gatewood

red bank high school football coach

Q: How would you characterize this year’s team?

A: This team has some new faces at various positions of the offensive line, secondary, and quarterback. But all candidates are very talented and have developed experience over the last year. The team has quality speed and athleticism, great football knowledge, and work ethic.

Q: What will be the keys to your success?

A: Gaining valuable experience while competing in a strong region with high-caliber non-region opponents. Developing depth in both lines of scrimmage is going to be extremely important. Playing football with attention to detail and growing the young players up. Excellence in special teams.

Q: Who will be your key leaders on the team?

A: AD Crutcher (WR/DB/DL), Tyler Wright (WR/S), Jake Brune (QB/DB), Jaden Baccus (WR/S), Jacob Valovcin (OL/DL), Cameron Jackson (WR), Daune Morris (WR/DB/S), and Kobe Smith (WR/DL).

Q: What are your biggest reasons for optimism?

A: The great effort by our players and coaching staff. Key players with experience.

Q: What can you build on from last year?

A: We had a slow start, but the players and staff did not panic and made a quarterfinal 4A run in the playoffs.

Q: Any lessons learned from last year?

A: Keep preparing each week and get better at something every time we have the chance to work.

Q: How would you characterize your team’s speed?

A: Very good team speed, especially at the running back and wide receiver positions, as well as the defensive end positions.

Coach’s View

We will play a strong non-region schedule, which will help prepare for a strong region 3-4A. The development of young talent will be vital. The defensive is the linchpin and will be relied upon. Offensively, a talented group of skill players will need to make impacts immediately. Special teams will need to be a cornerstone of the 2022 season.
