Q & A With Coach Rusty McIntyre

sequatchie county high school football coach

Q: How would you characterize this year’s team?

A: Hardworking, focused, and committed.

Q: What will be the keys to your success?

A: Being fundamental, maintaining focus on the goals throughout the year, and developing depth.

Q: Who will be your key leaders on the team?

A: Payton Campbell (QB/DB), Brandon Presto (OL/DL), Brayden Johnson (WR/TE/LB), Avery Headrick (OL/DL), Dakota Hinders (RB/DL), Garrett Worthington (OL/DL), and Jacob Lockhart (TE/LB).

Q: What are your biggest reasons for optimism?

A: The players have had an incredible work ethic throughout the off-season. They have gotten stronger in the weight room. If they can take that work ethic and increased strength to the field, we will be an improved football team.

Q: What will keep you up at night?

A: Depth. This time of year, we have a lot of questions about depth.

Q: What can you build on from last year?

A: Played a difficult schedule last season and was able to make the playoffs after missing them in 2020.

Q: Any lessons learned from last year?

A: Control what we can control. There will be some things we cannot control, and we just have to adapt and overcome when it happens.

Q: How would you characterize your team’s speed?

A: Our team speed will be similar to last season. Speed will not be how we win. We will try to win with execution.

Coach’s View

I believe after this off-season, we will be a better football team this coming year. I think we will have a chance to win some games that some people think we can’t. However, it will all depend on how coachable we are all summer and fall. We have to take the strength gains from the off-season to the football field. As a coach, I feel really good about what our team has done since the end of last season to prepare for this season.
