Q & A With Coach Drew Akins

Q: How would you characterize this year’s team?

A: Workmanlike. This group not only works when they are on football time, but works hard on their own time too.

Q: What will be the keys to your success?

A: Staying healthy is always a key to success. We also have to develop on both the offensive and defensive lines.

Q: Who will be your key leaders on the team?

A: Eli Denton (RB/LB), Brady Montgomery (WR/DB), and Jackson Gibson (TE/DL).

Q: What are your biggest reasons for optimism?

A: The character and personality of this team. Everyone works and pushes others to work.

Q: What will keep you up at night?

A: My kids, Lochlan and Brynleigh. And depth, always depth.

Q: What can you build on from last year?

A: I think another season making the playoffs (three straight now). Competing in the playoffs has become the standard here.

Q: Any lessons learned from last year?

A: I think we learned a lot about ourselves as a staff. We are either coaching things or allowing them. We have to live up to our standard.

Q: Will we see anything different this year?

A: Different players, same system.

Q: How would you characterize your team’s speed?

A: We have players who can stress a defense in all directions. Defensively, we have players who can run sideline to sideline and leverage the ball.

Coach’s View

Starting on the road for three straight games, including an up-and-coming Notre Dame team, a county rival, and a region rival, will be very difficult. Then, facing other non-region tests like Carter, Smith Co., and Cleveland will prepare us to finish the year with three region opponents and a 4A title contender in Upperman. Eight teams on our schedule made the playoffs in 2021. If nothing else, we will be prepared for November.
